What To Plan For A Baby Shower

By Edie Mindell

Planning a baby shower can seem like a daunting task. However, it is one of the easiest occasions to plan for. Just make sure you keep the guest of honor as well as the others attending the event in mind as you plan the occasion. Areas that you should consider include what food to serve, how to decorate the location, what games to play, and what shower favors to give your guests.

Food and Drink Most people planning a baby shower prefer to keep the menu light. Finger foods are generally enough to keep your guests satisfied. Inquire about the food preferences of the expectant mother, as well as those attending the party. You want to be sure to serve items that the majority of people will like. For beverages, a punch is generally made to serve at a baby shower. Also, keep a pitcher of water on hand for those that prefer another beverage.

Decorations The decor for the baby shower does not have to be an expensive ordeal. Drape some streamers from the ceiling across the room. Blow up several balloons and tape them to different areas of the streamers. A baby shower banner may also be appropriate. It can be hung directly over a table or the area in which the mother-to-be will sit to open gifts. Balloons can be added to the mailbox or other structure outdoors to indicate the location of the event.

Games A classic baby shower game involves trying to accurately measure the mommy’s belly. Yarn and scissors are all that are needed for this game. Each person cuts a piece of the yarn that they think will fit correctly around the mother’s midsection. The person that is the closest to being accurate wins.

Another game involves having the guests wear a clothespin. They are not allowed to say the word, “baby” the entire time they are attending the shower. If they slip and say the word, their clothespin goes to the person who caught them. If a person has multiple clothespins and is caught saying the word, they must forfeit all of their pins. The person with the most clothespins at the end of the shower is the winner.

Favors Some baby shower planners may choose to purchase favors to give to the guests. These are typically some items that will remind those attending of the special occasion. These can be personalized with the baby’s name and date of the shower. They should not be too expensive, as you will need to buy plenty for everyone to take one home with them. Depending on your time and creativity, you can choose to create your own baby shower favors or purchase them pre-made.
