What You Must Know Before Buying Casual Dinnerware

By Bobby Dillingar

It doesn’t matter if it’s disposable plates or fine china, dinnerware is available in many different shapes and designs. Dinnerware sets are made of many different types of materials that will fit any budget. Almost all sets are durable and are designed to match any kind of decor.

Porcelain is made from clay and is used to make everything from dinnerware to figurines. This material is heat treated to make it extremely hard and is available in many colors, white is the most popular color for porcelain. It is strong and hard to break which makes it great for dinnerware sets. It can be more expensive and is sometimes considered fine china due to the quality of porcelain. People also like the translucent look that porcelain has.

Another material you have to choose from is stoneware, sometimes called man made stone. Stoneware does not need as much heat to make it strong and comes in brown and gray colors due to the impurities in the clay. Often times, a glaze is added to give the material a nice shine and give it more durability. Stoneware can last for a very long time if properly cared for. It is also dishwasher safe and is a great choice for everyday dinnerware.

A ceramic material called earthenware commonly used to make pottery tableware and other items is composed of clay, quartz, feldspar, and kaolin. Earthenware is one of the oldest materials used to make pottery items which are most commonly red and brown in color. This material is not durable like stoneware and porcelain which can easily be broken. To make it hold up when exposed to water, it must be fire glazed to avoid damage. One of the most common forms of earthenware is terracotta, which is used to make flower pots.

Most decide on which casual dinnerware set based on cost. Some shy away from porcelain, as it is very nice, because of the much higher price point than stoneware and earthenware. When it comes to durability and scratch resistance, stoneware is the way to go. It can be found with endless amounts of raised designs and interesting colors to please almost everyone. If you are looking for everyday casual dinnerware or a formal set, you will be able to find it in stoneware. When looking for an inexpensive and long lasting option in dinnerware, stoneware will be a great choice.

Corelle, Gibson, Pfaltzgraff, and Fiesta are manufacturers that offer a great selection of casual dinnerware sets. There are even celebrity chefs that offer their own brands of dinnerware such as Rachel Ray, Emeril Lagasse, and Gordon Ramsey.

Most department stores offer large selections of casual dinnerware these days. But you can see much more and get better prices by finding the set you desire on the Internet.
