A lot of people will decide not to travel by train as they feel that the prices being charged are exorbitant. However if you follow our suggestions on how to save money when travelling by train you could find yourself saving quite a tidy sum on these fares in the future.

Suggestion 1 – If you are able to book the tickets you need for travelling by train ahead of the date when you intend to travel. Most of the tickets for travelling by train on certain days and at certain times can be purchased at least 12 weeks before. If you can do this you can make quite a big saving on the cost of your ticket. But be aware that the number available at the discounted price is often very limited.

For example if you looking to get a return ticket from Bristol to Newcastle and booked it with the train company 12 weeks before the travel date you may find yourself only paying 30 for it. However if you were to buy the same ticket on the day you want to travel then the cost could be as much as 86.70.

Suggestion 2 – When it comes to travelling by train if you can avoid using this service during the peak hours then you can save yourself quite a lot of money. For example avoid travelling between the hours of 7 and 9 in the morning and 5 and 8 in the evenings during the week.

Suggestion 3 – If you simply don’t have the time to book your train tickets well before your travel date you can still book them before you arrive at the station. Simply phone up and buy your tickets and then pick them up from a machine when you arrive at the train station. Although you may only make a small saving it is better than nothing at all.

Suggestion 4 – One of the best ways of how to save money when travelling by train is to sign up to train company newsletter. By signing up for such things you will receive an email in which any special offers the train company has are going to be seen by you first. You may be lucky and be in with a charge of getting the price of a return ticket that takes you from London to Inverness for just 5.

Suggestion 5 – Another way for you to save money when it comes to travelling by train is that if you intend to spend time travelling around on such for several days then purchase a rail rover ticket. These are a lot cheaper and will allow you to travel a lot further. However you need to be aware that you will only be able to use these at certain times of the day.

Above we have shown you just a few ways of how to save money when travelling by train. If you were to go online there are plenty of others that are worth considering using.
