Anne Frank is linked with the city of Amsterdam. This young girl and her family hid from Fascist forces at Prinsengracht 263 for over two years but they ultimately were discovered . She and her sister were sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where she died. While in hiding Anne kept a diary. This was afterwards discovered by her father who survived the camp and was sent to a publisher. It became a world wide phenomenon and was translated into countless languages as well as influencing a number of screen plays and theatre productions. Today the Anne Frank Huis is a memorial to this terrible period, including many of her own possessions on show, a map where her dad monitored the progress of the Allies and an exhibition on the holocaust.

The Van Gogh Museum is a total must if one wishes to find out more about the life and times of Vincent Willem van Gogh. This brilliant but extremely agitated artist sliced a section off one of his ears during one especially notorious period of insanity. He also endured many terribly dark periods that ended in alcoholism, psychosis, self harm and ultimately led on to his killing himself. Despite these episodes – or maybe as a consequence of them – he produced a large number of internationally famous works, such as Sunflowers. The museum has a selection of transient and permanent exhibitions that attract many thousands of visitors each year.

In 1672, French and English forces attacked Holland, bringing about a sudden halt to Amsterdam’s Golden Age. In spite of this disorder, it maintained its standing as a commercial centre for staple products and its significance in the finance world as lately as 1795. But there were some gigantic changes ; while previously tar and pitch were the goods of trade, now gold and silver were the new commodities. A huge number of houses were created in the period – a sign of how well the city obviously was doing. This explains why today, most residential buildings in the centre date from the 1700s.

In 1795 the French attained power, defeating the incumbent government and bringing an end point to the old Republic. As they started to occupy Holland, this Dutch city felt the adverse effects and fell into recession. This was a period of first stagnation and then decline, which was to last 1813. A big number of houses were abandoned and remained empty for long periods of time. Eventually a significant number became derelict and slid down as no one had inclined to them for so very long. By a stroke of fortune, a low number of interiors and facades from the Empire period stayed untouched for us to like today.

When you have spent the day strolling around here, you might need to run away from folks for some time and all that energy. If this is the case, perhaps look into one of the many campsites found in or around the city. This is an intensely budget friendly option, and it is very easy to meet with all kinds of folk, from Holland or further a field, over a barbeque or picnic. Not only do they supply a site for your tent, but clothing washing facilities, secure storage and canoe and bike hire are also available . The weather is most amenable to camping between mid March and the end of October.
