A Look at Punta Cana
In the Eastern most part of the Dominican republic lies the province of La Altagracia. At the very tip of La Altrgracia, lies the newly created municipal district known as, Punta Cana-Bavaro. The beaches, which are the most famous part of the beautiful Punta Cana, face both the Caribbean and the Atlantic oceans. Since the 1970s, Punta Cana has been a very popular tourist destination. The majority of the 50+ resorts in Punta Cana are European owned (mainly Spanish). The Dominican Republic’s Spanish and Native American culture is reflected in the interior design and architecture of the resorts in the area.
The population of Punta Cana is estimated to be 100,000 people, with an expected growth rate of 6% per year. To the north it borders three beaches and the village of Cabeza de Toro. It is located 28 miles (45 kilometers) from the nearest city, Higuey, and it takes about an hour to drive there. Higuey is the 500-year-old of capital of La Altagracia province.
To the south of Punta Cana, resides the small fishing village of Cabo San Rafael and the Cap Cana resort. Another fishing village known as Boca de Yuma, is also located to the south by a 100 meter (300ft) high cliff. Boca de Yuma’s existence dates back to the 16th century. Another historic location in the area is the fortress of Ponce de Leon. It is in the town San Rafael del Yuma, which is in one of the more inaccessible areas in the La Altagracia province.
The province of La Altagracia boasts over 100 kilometers (62 miles) of coastline. For the most part the weather is very pleasant, although at times mildly windy. The surrounding waters are mainly shallow with many marine pools that are safe and ideal to bathe in. The main beaches in the area are: Uvero Alto, Macao, Arena Gorda, Bvaro, El Cortecito, Cabeza de Toro, Cabo Engao, Punta Cana and Juanillo.
The main shopping area is known as, Bavaro. It starts at the Cabaze de Toro and continues until Macao Beach. With the influx of resorts, Bavaro became a focal point for shopping malls, fast-food stores, drug stores, fine restaurants, banks, clinics, workshops, supermarkets, and schools.
The largest town in the district is Veron, which is the last name of the French owner of a timber business from the 1930s. Veron now acts as the home-base city for the workers in nearby hospitality industry. A good thing to note, for those wishing to drive in this region, is that Veron has one of the four gas stations in Punta Cana. The next nearest gas station is 48 kilometers (30 miles) away in Higuey.
Punta Cana is served by the Punta Cana Airport, which is one of the best connected and busiest airports in the Caribbean. Not even the Las Amricas International Airport in Santo Domingo handles as much traffic. Opened in 1984, to service Punta Cana, it has the unique distinction of being the world’s first privately owned airport. American travelers will be glad to note that the airport is now equipped with a US Customs pre-clearance station.
