By Jay Dy

Peru in Western South America is paradise for anyone considering Peru adventure tours. The country can boast three distinct areas, but also very different geographical terrains. The Pacific Ocean lies to the west and is a narrow strip of mainly arid plains with a number of valleys that turn to rivers during the rainy season. The Andes Mountains runs parallel to the ocean and provides the highest point in the country. Finally, you can sample excursions into the Amazon rain-forest which accounts for around 60% of the country.

Visitors can sign up for tours from two days to 15 days duration. Most of the nights are spent in comfortable and first class accommodation hotels. Visitors have a whole host of tour itineraries including several activity choices, to pick from allowing them to tailor their tour to their interests.

You can expect to be accompanied by local tour guides. You can expect your guide to be knowledgeable about the history of their country and the customs of the Inca people. Many of the local guides speak several languages, and have no problem in communicating with individuals from different countries.

Adventure tours all include hiking at some point in the excursion and can be very strenuous. The terrain in the different areas of Peru can cause difficulties for anyone with mobility problems or some other types of health issues. It is always advisable to check before booking a tour what you will need in terms of footwear and clothing.

One excursion most visitors enjoy, is a trip to Pisac for the Inca market. They can enjoy bartering for local products that make great holiday souvenirs or gifts. Although the market is open three days, Sunday is the best day for visitors to witness all the Mayors from the surrounding villages in their full mayoral dress for church. At the top of the hill behind the village, visitors can hike up to spend some time in the ruins.

In addition to many hiking tours, visitors on the excursion to Lamay will have the opportunity to walk over the Lamay bridge. A hike up to the historical ruins above the village is considered very strenuous and usually takes around two and a half hours. The excursion party then hikes past the ruins and a reservoir and then on down to Calca.

For those who want to experience a trip through the Rio Grande and meet the locals in their natural habitats, they can do so on horseback. Apart from the spectacular scenery, the excursion allows visitors to study and photograph all the unique flowers and plant life. A visit to Pichingote, allows visitors see the houses built into the rock face that are still occupied by the villagers today.
