Can’t Miss Sites to Tour in New York City

By Mark Hall_ | January 30, 2010

For those people that think they can visit the top American city for a long weekend, think again, as you will be hard pushed to see everything it has to offer in seven days in New York. Of course the first port of call should really be the Empire State Building, especially a trip to the eighty sixth floor. Some people swear that it is better to visit the top floor of the Rockefeller Center but you really do need a clear day to fully appreciate the view. Tour boats can take visitors out to see the big lady ‘The Statue of Liberty’ but be prepared for long delays these days; the view of her from Ellis Island is an option worth considering.

Thankfully, the Staten Island ferry is free and provides some great views of the Lower Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty; it is also worth walking around the terminal as well as there are many excellent street performers there. If you are spending seven days in New York you’ve got to see the site where the World Trade Center Towers stood, something that changed all our lives.

It has become an obligatory stop and no seven day trip to New York would feel complete without a visit to this tragic site. There is certainly a strange atmosphere to the whole, very large area that the An emotionally lighter attraction is to visit some of the famous stores like Tiffany’s or the Lower East side area where there are numerous bargain warehouses to look around.

If you’re up for more discount shopping then you need to get to Maceys and have your tourist discount card handy as it can save you eleven percent after which a trip to Bloomingdales would be in order. The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum will also be worth visiting late next year when it re-opens after a period of refurbishment; this attraction is highly recommended and worth putting on your list of places to visit. Many special (and large) craft are located here including a number from World War II, namely the aircraft carrier the USS Intrepid. Although it is actually free to enter, the NY City Police Museum is funded by donations from visitors (five dollars is the recommended amount); it contains a great deal of information about the World famous Police Department and you can buy souvenirs too.

Side Tenement Museum which captures the lives of immigrants to New York back in 1864 On Central Park is the fascinating Museum of the City of New York with millions of objects for researchers but for tourists, an ever-changing program of exhibitions showing the past, present and future of the Big Apple. The museum is in a beautiful building which is free to enter but a nine dollar donation is normally given with plenty of souvenirs available. As I am sure you can imagine if you have been on a trip to any major capital city, there is far more to see and do than a short stay or even a seven day trip to New York can accomplish.

Can’t Miss Sites to Tour in New York City

By Mary Bush | December 29, 2008

Being a twenty four hour city, a visitor may find that seven days in New York just isn’t enough time to take in everything it has to offer. No trip to New York would be complete without a visit to the Empire State Building, and the 86th floor is definitely not to be missed. Rockefeller Center for the best view but it is best left to individual taste. Most people’s first proper view of the Statue of Liberty is from a tour boat but increasing numbers of people often mean it is better to land at Ellis Island.

As an alternative why not go to Staten Island via the free ferry and look at the Statue of Liberty from there; dropping off at the terminal is the best place because it is where there are some good street artists. Probably on everyone’s list is where the World Trade Center Towers once stood.

Bloomingdales is another famous store (for the wealthy) to look around but it is Maceys, who will give 11 percent discount on production of a tourist card where most people will head for. An excellent tourist location is the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum which is likely to be closed until the end of 2008; although often underestimated, once it opens its doors again, it will be well worth a visit. There is a great deal there with the USS Intrepid taking center stage being a Second World War aircraft carrier but there is a Concorde and other underwater vessels there too. The New York City Police Museum is worth an hour if you’re down that way; it’s free to enter but a five dollar donation is recommended to help with its upkeep; many TV viewers have grown up with the cop shows set in New York and a large amount of memorabilia is housed here.

The migrant period of New York is highlighted in an excellent exhibition at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum where scenes of what made America a great place to be are alongside of scenes America would like to forget. For a step back in time it worth going to Central Park where the New York Museum is located; this is an exhibition of many periods relating to the life of The Big Apple. The venue is also free but relies on donations and souvenirs to survive; generally visitors provide a donation of approximately 9 dollars. Most visitors seem to be on a flying visit so end up missing some of the most beautiful areas and that’s why seven days in New York should really be the minimum stay.
