If you are in a large city, it is likely that you will ride in taxis that are distinctive to where you are. New York is known for its yellow cabs of course. Once you have arrived in the city you are visiting, consider using a cab that is city run. Often times the cost of this service is a little more than a regular taxi, but it will benefit you in the long run. Being a stranger in a strange city can be confusing; having a driver who is city based can make a world of difference in your travel experience.

Firstly, they are private transportation of course. Whilst part of the fun of traveling is getting to know the culture, which is often done by getting on public transport, when first arriving it just saves a lot of hassle of loading luggage and going to other destinations before yours.

If you are fortunate enough to get a friendly driver, you may even end up with a very knowledgeable tour guide. You will get bonus points if you can converse with him or her in their native language. Not all will be open to showing you around, but you will be lucky if they will.

Having a local expert as a driver will give you the added benefit of a swift trip to where ever you are going. There is no likely instance of unexpected stopping along the way. They know the best routes to get you to your destination quickly.

If you want a perfect photo that represents the city you are in, then having pictures taken with these cabs are ideal. It only adds to the authenticity of the trip. These pictures make great souvenirs as well.

Some drivers, if asked, will be willing to snap a picture of you next to their cab. If you tip them well, and ask nicely, it is likely they will do anything. They might even agree to having their picture taken as well. It is a personal choice, though.

Because there is a constant likelihood of being taken advantage of by people who want to scam tourists, caution should be used when hiring taxis. It is suggested that only cabs that are recommended by the tourist desks at the airport should be used. They know the designated cabs and can ensure your safety.
