The internet has opened up opportunities to find cheap flights more than any other technology. Combined with other aspects of globalization, customers really do have more options. Before, travelers were limited to local or regional travel agents. Now, though, users can find tickets in the range they need instead of going home defeated and without a holiday.
While we do sometimes complain about the lack of human contact when looking for customer service, there are benefits of avoiding those representatives. From a company’s perspective, it is simple: less time on the phone equals less costs and more time to work on other things. By booking online and reducing the burden on their agents, you are doing them a favor. In return, many airlines offer their best deals to online customers. The internet-savvy know this, but others may need some coaching before getting comfortable booking online.
Some of the fundamentals do not change, though. Earlier still means cheaper. Ideally, you would know your travel dates well in advance, as some companies offer special deal even six months ahead of time. The usual rule is to try to book at least one month before you intend to fly.
Large airlines and smaller ticket sites also offer last minute deals, though, so being late does not have to be fatal to your holiday plans. While you are running more of a risk, airlines do occasionally have seats that will go unsold, so they reduce rates to fill them.
Like anything else, though, you do have to make some sacrifices, depending on the type of ticket you end up buying. Unlike full-price tickets, many cheap tickets cannot be refunded. Likewise, most companies will not let you change the dates on these tickets, so plan carefully before you book and read the policy on changes and refunds.
Aggregators, sites that search multiple websites for the best fares, should not be overlooked. These sites can often save you time. Sometimes they also save you money. Comparing sites can give you an idea of what fares are out there with a single click. Of course, if you think these claims are dubious, you can always crosscheck with the original airline.
Finding cheap flights can make or break a holiday plan, but they do not have to be so troublesome. Familiarizing yourself with internet sites is the first step. Many travel agents are also schooled in seeking out these sites and promotions. A little extra effort can result in you sitting pretty, knowing that you paid much less for your fare than the person sitting next to you.
