If you think of safari places, the Kruger National Park in South Africa is among the locations that people automatically think of. It lies in the north east part of South Africa straddling Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces. The national park covers an region roughly the size of Israel and serves up a wildlife experience that is thought of as the very best in Africa.

The Kruger National Park was set up in the late 1800s to safeguard the wildlife residing in the Lowveld. The variety and diversity of species identified right here is impressive with with 330 types of tree, 500 bird species and nearly 150 animals.

The closest airport will depend upon which region of the National Park you would like to take in. Hoedspruit Airport serves the north of the park while Kruger/Mpumalanga International Airport provides access to the south. The two international airports have decent internal connections from Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. Alternatively, it’s feasible to drive up from Johannesburg. For the southern gates, follow the N4 to Nelspruit / Mbombela and from there, Kruger is sign posted. Driving time is around five hours. More time should be allowed if you are driving to the northern gates of Kruger.

There are different options for travellers to Kruger. Day excursions are available from surrounding towns such as Hazyview. Self drive holidaymakers are also welcome but there is a cap on visitor numbers which means it is best to book in advance.

There are 9 entrance gates to Kruger and enough travelling time has to be allowed as entrance gate and restcamp gates are closed during the night. Access to the park will not be authorized after dark and there are a few other park rules to which tourists must follow.

There are several camps and facilities within Kruger national park including restcamps, bushveld camps, overnight hides, bush lodges and luxury lodges. There is plenty to witness in the park including the Big Five (Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, Lion and Rhino) and the famous Baobab tree.

South Africa has approximatelyseven hundred National Parks and the most famous of all all is Kruger National Park. It hosts thousands of holidaymakers every year in hope of seeing the Big 5.. Check here for free reprint license: South Africa’s Most Well-known National Park.
