Take A Fantastic Voyage With Peru Amazon Tours

By Hellen Moare

Peru Amazon Tours offer a splendid, yet surprisingly little-known vacation alternative. When we think of the Amazon River, the country that first comes to mind is Brazil, but the river is so vast that no one country contains it all. The Amazonian river basin actually covers more territory than the continental United States, as well as sixty percent of Peru itself, yet it remains almost secret to tourists.

Most people who think of this fascinating South American country usually think of the ancient temple of Machu Picchu, and other ancient indigenous sites. The terrain that comes to mind is either mountainous, or dense jungle, or a combination of both. But Peru is also a wonderful place for an extended river vacation.

On the whole, the jungle is populated quite lightly, but there are cities dotting the green canopy, such as Iquitos and Loreto, as well as native peoples such as the Boras or the Yagua, both of whom are accustomed to tourists from the developed world. The huge, cross-continental river seems to have as many names as it has tributaries. To some it is the Tunguraua, or King of Water. To others it is the Paranaguasu or Great River, and to still others it is the Paranatinga, the White River.

In country, the Peruvians call their jungle the “Selva”, and there are fundamentally two kinds of Selva, Low and High Selva. River tours are of course Low Selva, which has a hot, humid climate and dense green vegetation. Sensitive tourists might palpably sense the sheer life force becoming stronger, as the bird plumage seems brighter against the green foliage, and insect life becomes denser and more varied.

There are particular options to suit almost every particular taste, so one can have many entirely unique vacations from just this destination, returning frequently. Those who love birding are often the most familiar with Peru, which boasts more species of birds than North America and Europe together. One out of every five bird species is either native to the country or migrate here, and each year more new species are discovered.

Riding the rivers is an adventure unto itself, as Peru offers white water rapids for sport, and magnificent waterfalls for display. It goes without saying that the fishing is superb. Here one will find the notorious red-bellied piranha in even better than 3D, as well as the less familiar, but enormous, black piranha. Game fish include the slender Arowana and the Tiger Peacock Bass, both of which have excellent reputations for not allowing themselves to be reeled in without a terrific fight.

Macaws, parrots and other bird species provide not just gorgeous plumage but the jungle has so many of them that each morning they drown out almost any alarm clock. The mere names of the bird varieties are a sort of music. There is the Andean cock of the rock, the Marvelous Spatuletail and the Scarlet headed barbet, not to mention over eighteen hundred others.

All this is but the beginning of the possibilities for adventure that await the tourist willing to be pleasantly surprised. The flora and fauna, and the wildlife living beneath the canopy, are each reasons to visit all by themselves. Put it all together and Peru Amazon Tours offer not just a vacation, but a world of vacations.
