Taxis, in today’s world, are seen around every corner and for many people they are a necessity. Taxis are vehicles, each having its own driver, which citizens can use for transportation. The drivers charge by the time or miles that are driven with you in the vehicle. The idea of paying someone to take another person to a different place is actually an old concept that has quite an interesting history.

We know they had them in ancient Roman times. If course the vehicle was different then. It consisted of a carriage that literally used horsepower to get around. The interesting part is the meter. It worked with a mechanism that dropped little metal balls into a basket as the wheel turned. At the end the driver counted the balls and that was your bill.

The meter as we know it today was invented by Wilhelm Brunn in 1891 and the world’s first vehicle fitted with a meter was built six years later in Germany by Gottlieb Daimler. They were at first placed outside the vehicle above the front wheel on the driver’s side, but soon moved to the inside of the vehicle. The first meters were mechanical. Today electronic meters are used.

The mechanical meters that sat outside of the cars were placed above the wheel in front of the driver in view. These made ticking sounds from the mechanism it used and even when they were moved inside, the passengers had to deal with that sound. In the 1980s, electronic meters were created and allowed for a quieter ride and more accurate timing.

Taxis, for some people and cities, show a sense of pride for the town. Different cities have different colors. For many visitors a real New York taxi, for example, has to be yellow. Some find it a essential to get a ride in one of these iconic vehicles when vacationing there. One from London on the other hand, should be black, whereas buses must be red.

Some people in the US say that a taxi represents the American dream. Being a driver is having the ultimate job of equality. It does not matter of what race or gender you are, everybody is welcomed as a taxi driver. All get the same pay too.

Taxis are one of a kind. If you are taxi driver you are an artist. You must know your city inside out and sometimes you take the role of sympathetic ear. If your wife does not understand you and the barman does not want to listen, tell the taxi driver.

The concept of a hiring vehicle and its driver when you need to get from point A to point B is very old. Taxis, in today’s world, are seen around every corner and for many people they are a necessity. taxis For many visitors a real New York taxi, for example, has to be yellow..
