The Safety First Approach To Guns

By Carl Newton

If you like to watch the movies, or even too much television, you know things are going to get exciting when some character pulls out a gun. Weapons are cool to look at, make exciting loud noises, and really amp up the tension in a scene. In real life, however, guns do one thing really well, and one thing only.

In the real world guns are made for killing things. They are used for law enforcement work, self protection, and hunting. If you have ever been hunting, you know what kind of damage they can cause. Anything that can bring down a two thousand pound deer had best be reckoned with.

If you, or anyone you know and care about, wants to get a gun for any reason at all, safety should be the first thing on your mind. It shows up in the news often enough, the tragedies of unsafe practices. Kids get shot, people die, and it is a tragic nonsensical mess.

So where does the safety begin? It begins when you first purchase a weapon. You will probably have to register yourself as a lawful gun owner at some point, and it will be strongly recommended that you take a firearms safety course. Do so, and read every bit of literature that come with the thing. Know what you are holding in your hands, and how to use it correctly.

The lives of others may depend upon how you handle that weapon, as well. How will you store it at home, where there may be children underfoot? How do you keep it away from unsavory characters with ill intent? You lock it up is what you do. Put in a cabinet with a lock and use a trigger guard at all times. Keep everybody nearby safe, okay?

And when you took that safety course, you learned all about how to handle the thing correctly, and proper maintenance, and all about the use and storage of ammunition. Do not let this information go idly by over the years. Get the gun out and use it from time to time. Go out to the range and make sure that everything is in working order, including your self.

Guns are great tools to have, for hunting and for personal protection. Properly handled, stored, and maintained, they can bring peace of mind as well as put food on the table. But they are made for killing, make no mistake about it. Teat them with the respect they deserve and the safety they demand. Your life may depend on it.
