Vacationing In The Okanagan

The Okanagan Valley is located in British Columbia, in the western region of Canada. British Columbia is just north of Washington State. The Okanagan Valley is surrounded my majestic mountain ranges on the east and west as well as southern deserts and northern forests.

Vacationers find The Okanagan a perfect region for any seasonal getaway. Summer vacations can be filled with festivals, golfing, hiking, sightseeing, or day trips. Winter vacations often consist of skiing or other mountain adventures. Regardless of the season, visitors can find a variety of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

The Great Basin Desert region of Southern Okanagan can be a great location for long summer vacations. The Okanagan is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. British Columbia has multiples lakes and miles of sandy beaches. The warmer months in Canada see visitors from the world over enjoying an inexpensive beach vacation in the Okanagan.

Popular beaches in the Okanagan can be very populated in the warmer months, with many families finding fun and relaxation on the sand and in the water. More secluded beach locations can be found. No matter where you decide to lay your blanket or put up your beach umbrella, you are sure to find many activities for everyone in the family to enjoy.

Whether you’re interested in just relaxing on the beach and enjoying the mild summer weather or wish to frolick in the water, the beaches of Okanagan have much to offer. Shallow waters at many locations are great for swimming. Many beaches include volleyball areas, slides and other playground equipment for children, and floating docks. Grassy areas near the beach are wonderful play areas for children, and make for good barbequing and picnicking spots as well.

Festivals held throughout the region in all seasons are also a big draw for tourists. There are festivals that focus on all activities, hobbies, and interests. Cultural events feature the arts and musical performances. There are many exhibitions of local artwork, crafts, beadwork, and photography. Festivals can be found that focus on the Native culture of the Canadian aboriginal population. Many festivals can be relaxing and enjoyable events, and feature educational opportunities as well.

Other festivals include nature-oriented activities like guided tours for bird watching, learning about the natural landscape and wildlife, or just taking in the glorious natural beauty of the Okanagan. Festivals can even be found that celebrate wild mushroom harvesting and ice sculpting. No matter where your interests may lie, you are bound to find a festival in Okanagan that suits your fancy.

The Okanagan can be a great place to enjoy nature and outdoor sports. There are many locations for a good hike. Mountain biking and rock climbing are also popular. Many visitors enjoy winter vacations featuring skiing and snowboarding. With more than 50 ski resorts, Okanagan is home to some of the best steep trails for those who love a challenging run.

Those who love the outdoors will find Okanagan a beautiful vacation locale in any season. Hiking and learning about the local vegetation and wildlife can be an adventure. There are many incredible animals in the Okanagan. Lovely birds abound in the region, making it a destination for birdwatchers. Local wildlife includes reptiles, amphibians, snakes, moose, sheep and many others critters. Larger animals like bears, cougars and puma can occasionally be sighted, as can deer, caribou, big horn sheep, and even wild horses. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of Ogopogo, the legendary sea monster that calls Lake Okanagan home.

The Okanagan region includes towns and cities of varying sizes. If you’re interested in local shopping or dining, you may enjoy taking day or evening trips to some of the region’s metropolitan areas. There are quaint villages and bustling cities from which to choose, and any event or task that is on your agenda can be easily found.

Wineries abound in the Okanagan. Tourists come every year from around the globe to tour some the world’s best wineries. Wine festivals are also common in the region, with the Annual Okanagan Fall Wine Festival being among the largest and most popular. It is the only wine festival in North America that is held smack dab in the center of grape season.

Those who enjoy golf will also find Okanagan a great vacation destination. There are tons of golf courses in British Columbia and the season for golfing can be pretty long, sometimes starting as early as February and remaining active though November. The region is well suited to courses of varying difficulty levels, and any avid golfer, regardless of their experience level, will find courses to their liking.
