What To Expect From Your Cruise Vacation

By William Jones

When you start planning your cruise vacations you may be excited by the possibility that it will be cheaper than your “normal” vacations have been in the past. Cruises can be cheaper than some self-catering land vacations or a vacation rental but there are still some trips and traps that you will need to know about and budget for.

Using bold large print numbers to highlight the lowest possible prices is what adverts do to get you hooked on the idea of taking a cruise. These prices usually cover the most basic accommodations and because of this price they are normally the first to go and subsequently may not be available when you try and book. These prices may also not include port charges and taxes that can cost up to a few hundred dollars on top of what you have already paid for your accommodation.

It is important that you understand that cruise accommodation varies greatly. If you have never been on a cruise before then you might get a bit of a shock when you get to your room as rooms on a cruise tend to be quite small and that includes the more luxurious rooms. So keep in mind that the “basic” accommodations will not be as roomy as the luxury rooms. Lots of seasoned cruise vacationers have gotten into the swing of only using their rooms to sleep and shower. If you are planning to take a cruise for your honeymoon or this is your first cruise it’s a good idea to splash out a little bit. It’s also recommended to splash out on a room with a window or a balcony. This can make life at sea even more pleasant.

The rates advertised for your cruise are normally per person based on two people sharing. Going on a cruise by yourself can be fun, but there are added expenses that you have to ad in. Having a cabin all to your self can end up being pretty pricey adding about one third extra onto your bill. You also have the option of sharing a cabin with a fellow traveler. There are companies that will match you up with other same sex solo travelers to share your cabin with.

Some cruise as said to be “all inclusive” but there are still things that you will have to pay for out of your own pocket. Where as your food and activities are included in the price of the cruise most cruises prices don’t cover alcohol. drinks on your cruise will usually be higher than there prices on the mainland and can add up quicker than you would expect. Trips at many ports of call are an additional charge. You may also want to consider buying your gifts whilst on land at a port. To factor in added costs to your cruise it is wise to set aside around one hundred dollars a day, this will help you to relax and enjoy your vacation even more.

You can have the bargain cruise that you want as long as you budget for unexpected costs and charges. You can either scrimp on the luxuries or you can budget a bit more and have a freer more pleasurable cruise vacation.
