Are your kids starting to get older and outgrow their bedroom dcor? Children grow up so quickly and of course there bedroom dcor needs to grow with them. It looks pretty funny to have your 10 year old boy in a Winnie The Pooh theme room or with little storks on the wall. It might feel like you just decorated the room but as kids grow fast their room dcor needs to be updated frequently. However, fear not as you children get older you can start to work with them on the dcor and it can become a great way to spend some quality time together. Even the hard to reach teens are willing to work with you if they get to decorate their room as it is a project any teen can get excited about. It also does not have to cost a fortune sometimes simple accents and a little bit of do it yourself work can make a room come together for much less then you would imagine.

Step 1: Budget Setting One of the first and most important steps that you should do before you go out shopping or even start looking for ideas is to set your budget. It can be a great experience to work with your child during this step or at least make sure you share the budget with them. This is a great opportunity to teach your children some important budgeting and expense tracking skills.

Theme – Color, Objects: The next thing you want to do is develop a theme. Talk with your child and gather some ideas about what they like and don’t like. You might even need to guide them in a bit in identifying things they like. Spend some time going to the library, walking through model houses, and searching the internet to gather things they like. You might even want to start a notebook or file and you can copy or print pictures that your children identify with and have them write down what they like about each picture. Over time after you get enough pictures and see enough example bedrooms you can get an idea of some themes they might be interested in.

Storage Storage Storage: That’s right we repeated it three times because it is one of the most crucial elements of good design. It is just like location is important to real estate well, storage needs and storage planning is crucial to bedroom decorating. If you want a clutter free environment then you have to plan for your storage needs beforehand. This can be done pretty easily by taking stock of what items your child has and plan your storage accordingly. For example if your child is an avid music freak then you will want to plan some storage space for their CD collection or musical instruments. It can be pretty easy to tie your storage needs into the overall theme once you know what you need.

One of the easiest ways to add a lot of color and fun ideas to help theme a room is paint and stickers. You can easily paint a focus wall in the room or do some large pieces of art work to pull the theme together in the room. Color is one of the most visual identifiers of your theme and therefore should be carefully planned for. If you do not want to get into painting large posters or wall art can pull a theme together very well also. Another new thing that is currently in vogue are wall stickers. These are huge oversize stickers that can be put up on just about any wall and they can add a great deal to the theme.

By wo0rking together with your child and carefully planning ahead using a budget and a theme you can easily redecorate the room. It does not have to be something that is super labor intensive or overly expensive just a few well planned purchases like some wall stickers and art as well a piece of furniture can do the trick. It is always much easier to add thematic accents to a room to get a fresh and new feel.
