Leadership Features in Industry

Physicians in business must be leaders-not just experts with their field. Exactly what does it mean for any physician being a leader in industry? What characteristics are companies looking for in physicians that need careers in market?

Physicians trying to find non-clinical careers might find a good slip in the medical device or pharmaceutical industries. Some should have no difficulty in demonstrating technical mastery in the job. In any case, they are domain experts. Unfortunately, physicians in business are required to be strong leaders-not just experts within their field of medicine.

Fortunately that the characteristics of an excellent leader can be learned. Contrary to what some believe, these qualities are not passed on from the DNA of well-known business leaders. Physicians can get or strengthen their leadership skills-and apply these skills in new career opportunities. But they are going to need to be deliberate and intentional about this-and get into market using their eyes open. Top companies may have high expectations for leadership-perhaps way more than for the technical facets of a job.

Some companies simply display their mission and vision statements-and almost never refer to them. For others, theses statements are extremely much an integral part of their culture or “social architecture.” They constantly talk about why they exist, what they need to attain later on, the things they value most-and the things they consider being the important thing features of leaders within their organization. In these businesses, management and staff continuously evaluate themselves and every other against these standards. Technical know-how is necessary-but not sufficient. Physicians will be needing to become experienced in medicine-but also true leaders in a dynamic business setting.

Different companies could use different terms to explain leadership-but the real key attributes are essentially the same. These core qualities are vital to most businesses and certainly connect with companies within the medical tool and pharmaceutical industries.
