Avoiding The Deadliest Affiliate Marketing Mistakes

By James Tang

Affiliate marketing can earn you a very healthy small fortune if you’re competent and work at it. Most people only lay around and dream about the kind of freedom you can enjoy from this activity. You can arrive at a point where you have the time and money to do the things you like with the knowledge that your business is running along, smoothly. The sad fact is most affiliates don’t get very far because they sabotage themselves with unnecessary mistakes. But you can learn a bit about your market, do some research, and completely avoid certain mistakes. There’s a good, to great, chance that many online marketers simply do not know the importance of the market. Next up – what you can do to prevent yourself from making mistakes that could be hazardous to your business.

If you want to guarantee that you’ll never make money, do this: Pick the wrong product to market as an affiliate. You need to pick a product for which there is a demand in the market place. So the way to find a product in demand is by correct market research. The herd mentality dictates that you choose a product that’s currently enjoying popularity, and you market it. If you know what to do with a popular product, how to market it, then it’s usually not a problem. That’s fine, but when you start marketing that popular product you’ll probably meet all the heavy-hitters of affiliate marketing. The work-around for this is to find a similarly high quality affiliate product that is not as popular as all the rest – less competition, easier to succeed. Truthfully, there are probably millions of affiliate products to promote, but taking the time to make the right choice will be time profitably spent. It’s also a great idea to do marketing tests with different products.

Not knowing the market you’re selling to is another classic major mistake. Good market research will determine if you even want to try to sell something to them. So the best approach is to learn about the market you want to get into, before you actually try to market anything to them. Ignoring this part is taking a risk because they may not be a market that buys anything online. You need to make a critical connection with your audience, and market research will reveal how to do that. If you don’t know anything about a market, you won’t know what the jargon is or what is important to them. This kind of planning and research will make the difference between success and failure.

Always try to only market those products that you really believe in. You can actually help yourself a lot if you simply buy the product you want to promote, then you’ll have first hand knowledge about it. This will allow you to totally watch out for your reputation as a quality marketer, online.

As with many things, learning how to sell affiliate products is a learned skill. Relationship building is just as important as knowing how to capture and drive traffic to your offers – then, presell them with good and honest information.
