Not too long ago, work meant spending more than forty hours of my week in a small cubicle in front of a computer, having little creative freedom or part in the decision-making process, and receiving a salary that’s just enough to cover for our monthly household expenses. Like most people, I dreamt of being able to work from home. The decision to ditch my day job was because I felt that I was overworked, so much so that it erodes into my already limited family time. I felt I was missing a lot, especially because I have children.

I was confident in leaving my day job because I knew there are several means to make money online and work from home. The first job I took on the Internet was to provide administrative support to an online marketing company. My tasks included creating content for client’s websites, conducting research, replying to e-mails, and complete various assignments. Pay was almost the same as my previous job, but interestingly I had more money at the end of the month as a content writer. This is because I no longer pay for fuel or transport, or buying new clothes to replace old ones.

While I was working as a virtual assistant I became acquainted to several online marketing techniques. These piqued my interest and soon enough I found myself dreaming of starting my own online marketing agency. I signed up for tutorials and webinars, and read extensively on various Internet marketing techniques.

It was a good thing that my better half took up web design in college so we were able to build a one-stop shop providing services from the creating the website, optimizing it, and strengthening its presence on the World Wide Web. Our clients like the fact that they no longer had to deal with several service providers to make their website and market their products and services. To attract customers, we made sure that our website showed our level of expertise and that we rank highly on the Web. In the beginning, our customers were mostly non-profit organizations and blog operators. Through referrals, we were able to widen our customer base and we now provide services to companies with different specializations. Our first headquarters was an underutilized detached garage in our property. This helped us to cut start-up and operational expenses during the early stages of our company. Business was good, and we are now able to afford renting an office space downtown. My wife and I decided that we should give other stay-at-home parents the chance to make money online from their own homes, so most of the people we employed work remotely and we just transmit assignments through e-mail.

Operating an online marketing company is not easy, but it is enjoyable. To be successful you need to have the ability to communicate effectively, be patient, and creative. You also have to make systems that are in line with industry’s best standards to make sure that project are done right and on time. It also requires a good eye to notice errors and quickly troubleshooting them. In this constantly evolving industry, it pays to be open-minded as well.

Running an Internet marketing agency is not devoid of risks. There is always that risk that you will not be able to meet the client’s expectations. There is also that risk of your system being attacked by virus and hackers which can affect your company’s productivity which in turn can hurt your reputation and earning potential. Nevertheless, these risks can be managed.

The company is now a decade old, and it provides a steady and substantial income stream for me and my family. Indubitably, having my own company makes achieving work and life balance not only a dream but a reality.
