How Do You Monitor Your Search Engine Optimization Ranking?

By Paul Sierra

Webmasters or internet marketers need to know how your website is ranked in major search engines like yahoo, Google etc., related to each keyword search that you are interested in, in addition to doing on-page and off- page optimization & analyzing visitors on your website. Knowledge of the SERP (search engine result page) position is important to ascertain income fluctuations, traffic volume, or any other parameter that would be used for search engine ranking.

Manual tracking of keywords by entering the phrase in browser and checking position of your target page is not recommended as it lacks many important steps. It is important to verify ranking and record positions and other relevant data to obtain a history of such rankings. If any changes made in the website have significantly contributed to change in rankings, easily that could be ascertained, despite that change in search engine algorithms, new websites and such other factors would make natural changes causing fluctuations in position of website in results.

Software’s like Market Samurai, which has a reliable rank tracker module, would help in effectively tracking the ranking of the website in the search results, number of back links and page ranks etc. Periodic triggering of updates will take data and stores into a database, which can be retrieved to make various reports with or without graphical representations.

By tracking the progress of each target keyword, the data would become information. While doing SEO, the effect of each change in contents or external links may be monitored closely. Though not visible immediately, the effects would become visible during the passage of time. Significant downward change in ranking might be due to a undesirable action on the website. Initial ranking fluctuations of new pages and that of established pages, should not be mixed as the former is very common.

The higher position in search engine results shows the better quality and usefulness of the page. Better ranking is natural if quality baclinks and good content are provided in the website. The rank tracker is definitely a good tool, but the content is a significant factor for having a better ranking.
