Introduction To Carbon Offsetting

By Raphael Russel

Carbon offsetting focuses on lowering the effects of greenhouse gas emissions by individuals or corporations caused either ignorantly or with awareness. The concept is that when you release such pollutants, you prevent the same from happening in any other site on the planet, in order to nullify your emissions. Hence a proper balance can be struck in levels of emission all over the world, which will keep a check on excessive harm to the environment.

One method to engage in carbon offsetting is to participate in community drives to improve the environment, engaging in tree plantation in your area, or performing any activity that will effectively reduce emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. However, this is not always possible, which is why the carbon offset system was proposed as an easier way where you can pay a company to make up for the harm done by you to the atmosphere. Your funds are then donated by the organization to agencies running ecological projects.

Administrations and industries are the primary participants in the carbon offsetting system and developed countries generally pay third world countries for reducing overall emissions, in what is called the Clean Development Mechanism, under the Kyoto Protocol.

Critics believe that carbon offset fails to rectify the issue of the ecological damage that an individual is accountable for. In both carbon trading and carbon offsetting, you just make a financial compensation for your damage without actually preventing it.

But people who believe in these systems claim that carbon trading with its monetary rewards can immensely encourage firms to perform their business in a more eco friendly way. Similarly, carbon offset permits individuals to project themselves as eco friendly in their community and help in creating awareness about the issue. Carbon offset has been adopted by a lot of celebrities and this has enhanced its popularity. The last few years have seen a rise in number of individuals actively practising this system, as they realise its potential of making the world cleaner and greener.
