How Do We Deal With The Loss Of A Loved One?

By Hilary Denver

Funeral services for a dearly departed is an action that helps you in confronting your own sorrow. Every culture has a way of creating tribute to the dead. Honoring the lives of those who passed away provides a sense of comfort and solace for who are left behind.

We grieve as innate reaction to loss. Grief is the anguish you experience when you lose something that or someone who is an important part of your life.

Several instances of grieving for the loss of someone or something are as follows:

- you have broken up with someone – you were fired from your job – you blew the big chance to pursue your dream – a member of the family tells you he or she has a serious illness – you find out that you are dying from a deadly illness – your spouse wants a divorce – loss of a cherished friendship – the pet that you had for a long time passed away – a person you love passed away

These scenarios can all cause us to grieve. Nevertheless, the most intense grieving that we feel is when someone we love – such as a spouse, a child, or a mother or father- passes away. Nothing can ever take their place in our hearts and minds.

We may have shared a huge portion of our lives with our loved ones who have died. So life is now never the same as it were when our loved ones were still alive. We feel the torment of having someone we love taken away from us. Still, it is in mourning that we cultivate the path to our own healing of the anguish that we felt with our loved one’s demise.

There is no correct or incorrect way to grieve. Yet we must opt for healthy ways to channel the pail, which can encourage the healing that we need after experiencing loss.

Grieving does not mean caterwauling or crying your heart out each time you recall what you have lost. Crying is not the only indicator that we are grieving the loss of a loved one. Someone may seem quiet, as if unfazed; yet deep down, they also feel the loss.

Grieving does not have a set duration, such as the “recommended” time of just one year. Grieving’s duration varies from person to person. No one can rush and instantly “get over” the grieving process. Time mends all pains and wounds.
