Search Engine Optimization And Google’s Current Look At Tag Clouds

By Delilah Dotson

Looking for some fun? Whatever you do, Don't Click Here!

Google’s Matt Cutts dishes out the current on tag clouds and how it touches on search engine optimization. To start off, tag clouds are the visuals you see on the left or correct side bar of a blog website which are made up of words or tags that are in reality links to the tag pages on the web site. Frequently applied tags appear bigger than those that are rarely applied. Cutts said there was a time when tag clouds were so essential in blogging that a lot of bloggers applied them to make the site more engaging. But according to Google, employing tag clouds may not be sound for search engine optimization.

Cutts explained that tag clouds can be overdone, and when that happens, Google may perceive it as keyword stuffing, a major no-no in search engine optimization. SEO is built-up on good content with just the adequate keyword density to make a web site rank.

Producing categories is advised, not making tag clouds. Cutts said that he utilises this scheme himself. With categories, visitors are presented prompt directory of topics featured in the blog, which may be the one they find of value to them. With more visitors enjoying the content, posting comment, and coming to the website, Google will most emphatically grant it a higher ranking.

Though not providing a standard rule, Cutts suggested to think twice or thrice about employing tag clouds. If it can be avoided, then not employing tags is better. But if not, then the lesser tags can have more right effect.

Tag clouds produce duplicate content on the website, which Google penalises. When a tag is created, the link gets to the tag URL. Visitors clicking the tag URL may think they will be seeing another content, when in fact, it is the duplicate content on the post, on the Home Page, and elsewhere. Visitors desire info that is helpful to them. Taking them to many places on your site which offer the same content will easily make them disfavour the web site. You will then lose your visitors, your traffic naturally lessens, and so do your page rank.

Lesson learned? Nothing still beats excellent and original content to win the game of search engine optimization.
