A lot of bloggers and website publishers think that keyword research is an exact science. Although some people may want you to believe this, it really isn’t so. The truth is the hunt for good keywords is more of an art form.
Although there might not be an exact science behind it, keyword research is critical to the success of a website, or can be. There are some very common mistakes that many make when researching their keywords. Knowing about them is half the battle in avoiding them.
Perhaps the biggest mistake many make is failing to use keywords at all. The truth is keywords are very powerful and vital to success. They help websites obtain traffic, which can lead to revenue. They can also assist in focusing a site’s theme. While it’s not always necessary to hire an expensive firm to select the best keywords going, having keywords included in the mix is important.
Improper use of keyword research tools is another hurdle that needs to be overcome. Firstly, keywords counts should be viewed only as estimates. Search count data, such as that returned by Overture, can be a month or more behind. And the numbers do not take into account all searches being done online. With this in mind, do not get hung up on just this data alone. If possible, run the same keywords through Ad Word Analyzer software and Wordtracker.com. The results are usually different, so you can actually find more keyword combinations.
Another big error that a lot of publishers make is using only a single keyword or phrase in their content. The trick nowadays is to create related words and phrases that fit the theme of the site. This helps take advantage of latent semantic indexing that is more common now. Tools such as WordNet can be useful for helping in selecting phrases to include.
Another sticking point centers on Keyword Effectiveness Index reliance. KEI is the ratio of the number of times a particular keyword is searched in regard to the number of sites ranked for that word. It is meant to help webmasters figure competition for a term. KEI is useful, but the thing to look for is how SEO strong the top sites on the list happen to be. Sometimes webmasters get into keyword research too much. These folks can make the mistake of not using keyword management tools. Poorly timed research is also a real killer for optimization. Wordtracker, for example, stores stats for the previous 90 days. This means those trying to research seasonal keywords, for example, won’t get very valid results during off times.
The last two things to watch out for are greed and waste. Many publishers go after keywords that pay out well. This can be great, but the truth is lower paying niche keywords can bring in more earnings over the long haul. They tend to have less competition. Waste comes into play when webmasters get over excited about research. Often, they will create list after list of targeted, niche keywords and never put them into action. It’s smart to focus on a single niche, implement the project and then move onto the next.
Keyword selection is an evolving art form or should be considered as one. Finding the right keywords doesn’t necessarily require a degree in rocket science. It does require patience, a little time and some willingness to research as you go.
