The world of Internet marketing is growing fast with more and more businesses setting up a presence on the web every day. Competition for customers is fierce, and new ways to attract more customers to your site are getting a lot of attention. One of the most successful and cost effective methods used for lead generation on the internet is search engine marketing. Search engine marketing is actually quite simple and functions with the use of keywords. If the site is tied to a phrase, for example “anyold web site”, and that phrase is ranked number one with a leading search engine, than this website will come up at the top of any search that is done for that phrase and “anyold web site” will see an increase in traffic.
In order to bring desired visitors to a website, the site must be ranked by the search engines for key words or phrases. Some people say that search engine marketing is a “hit or miss” method for getting traffic, in large part because there are so many outside influences and factors that can affect your strategy, and even if you do get a top listing, it could disappear with the next algorithm update.
No one can guarantee you a specific ranking because no one, other than the operators of the search engine, knows the specific algorithms that the search engines use to create the rankings. There are, however, certain tested and true strategies that will greatly improve your odds of being ranked highly, and you can pay most of the search engines to have your site featured in the text ads that will be located on the right side of the screen after a search. A guarantee of the ad’s location in the listings is impossible, though.
However, I am sure you are wondering what are the techniques to improve your chances of a high ranking. Generally, there are minor adjustments that can be made to the title, tags, and content on you page that will get it noticed. Title, content and tags are the three key elements that are used in the algorithms that most search engines use to generate their results. Pay per inclusion or PPI advertising is also available at most search engines with no guarantee of the ad’s location. The PPI method just guarantees that the site will be spidered and in the search engine database much sooner than it would with a general free submission.
You still need to learn how to target your keywords and optimize your site content if you want to get listed well in the traditional engines that spider your site and rank sites based upon pre-set algorithms, but you can still pay to buy a banner or text ad on those sites if that option is made available. Such paid or sponsored listings are usually clearly marked as advertisements.
Search engines are available that allow sites to pay for rankings. These search engines are usually known as ‘Pay Per Click’ engines. These don’t use algorithms to find pages based on their relevancy, but instead deliver results based on how much each website pays. One thing to remember with search engine marketing is that if someone is promising you instant top rankings, chances are it’s a scam and you will lose the money you invest and possibly get blacklisted by the engines in the process for cheating.
