So, what do you need to do to make that happen? There are a lot of factors involved in optimizing your site. One of the biggest parts of SEO is figuring out keywords, or the terms that people input into the search engine when they’re looking for a business like yours. There is a delicate balance between using these words and overusing them, so finding that balance is another important part of it. It isn’t just about keywords, though.

The search engines can’t include your site in their search results if they can’t crawl and index your site. Simply creating a website and publishing it doesn’t mean that it’s being included in the bots’ searches. A lot of site-building software has what is basically an “Off” switch to prevent bots from crawling unfinished pages. Failing to turn this access back on means that the search engine bots won’t see your site.

Even if access is allowed on your site, there are some things that can make it hard for bots to crawl your site. Sites that are messily coded, for example, can fail to rank for keywords that obviously apply to them. All aspects of your site, from the metadata to the content that visitors see, has to be set up to make it easier for the bots to read and catalog.

If you own a website that isn’t ranking as well as you’d like, it might be due to one of the many less-obvious factors involved in good SEO. It’s also important to remember that most people won’t progress beyond the first few pages of results when they search for something. It doesn’t matter how good your site is, and how useful the information, if the search engines don’t return your site in the first few pages of results, no one will see your site.
