There are many people interested in becoming a DJ – However, not all make have the right mindset required to achieve this lofty goal. The secret here, as a DJ for hire, is to understand your audience and tailor your approach accordingly.

DJ’s are best served by having a broad taste in music, so that they can cater to their audience. So, their are different styles you must become acquainted with, not just Pop or Hip Hop (not that their is always a discernible difference between the two) but different musical tastes across the spectrum.

Your audience will vary in age and taste. Let’s assume your are playing a Wedding for Tom and Suzanne, two 20 somethings. Well, the taste in music is sure to be different from Cedric and Mabel, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary. Quite different again if you’re playing a Roller Disco for teenagers. So you must tailor your music to the audience.

Failure to do so will leave the dance floor empty. Now while that is sure to happen from time to time, you want that to be the exception rather than the rule. You want word of mouth recommendations so that you’re a regular feature for weddings, anniversaries and disco’s don’t you?

Because of this, it’s often best to leave your musical preferences at the door for the moment. Give the people what they want to hear. Your steer will come later.

Experiment and introduces your own mixes in future. Introduce your own renditions and mixes scientifically, and watch carefully to see how the audience reacts. The best DJ’s are in tune with the ebb and flow of their audience, they are able to pick up the energy of the room and belt out the classics accordingly.

Becoming a DJ is about serving the public first, your ego later. The real buzz in this profession is found in watching the audience respond to YOU. Good luck!
