Enjoy Creating Your Own Wedding Invitations

By Dennis Chance

Are you creative? Do you enjoy artistic pursuits? Why not try adding some personality and pizzazz to that special event with do-it-yourself wedding invitations? You can not only invite your family and friends, but you can send them some original art as well. They’ll be very impressed by your creativity.

With computers, it is very simple to design and print amazing invitations. You can download templates, fonts, clipart and all sorts of things. The rest of the materials you need can be easily picked up at a stationery or art supply store.

The first choice you face is what paper to use. There are so many decorative papers out there that there will be the perfect paper for just about any style or theme. Are you going to have a formal wedding? The traditional ivory or white might be your best choice for paper. Are you going to have a beach wedding? You can even find paper that has a subtle beach scene, or tropical flowers.

After you nail down the paper you’ll use, then figure out what style printing you want, and what decorative elements. You may be tempted to add lots of little touches, but invitation designers recommend you not do this. Instead, figure on one decorative element.

You can glue on touches or use paint as well. If you have an artistic friend, or you yourself are artistic, you can go for it. Consider something like using watercolor paint around the edges for a border.

If you are handy with your glue gun, you can add a small dried flower, a shell, or a ribbon to your invitation. When you add a small item to the invitation it feels handmade and becomes a keepsake. Again, keep it simple. One item is lovely. Two or three is kitschy and overdone.

If you need some advice, check wedding message boards online. You can get advice or a second opinion on any of the materials or techniques you are considering. There are sometimes some vendors who go on to these boards and try to influence users but generally they are mostly populated with users and not vendors.

Do-it-yourself wedding invitations are a great way to add personality and panache to your wedding. Plus, they are a real money saver as well.
