Forget The Custom Wedding Invitations, Remember The Justice Of The Peace

By Errol Grange

While there is much ado about almost every aspect of an impending wedding, seldom do you come across a wealth of information concerning that humble figure, the justice of the peace. Sure, it is quite a task to design a custom wedding invitations, but that pales in comparison to the responsibilities of a justice of the peace. In fact, a JOP has number of impressive powers and responsibilities.

A justice of the peace is essentially the steam-valve for civil courts. He or she is charged with processing some of the lower priority cases and affidavits associated with various civil cases. This means he or she has to verify certain court documents, as well as relevant statutory declarations. All this and search warrants, divorce, and most famously, marriage records too!

It should be noted that his or her duties and responsibilities can vary, depending on the state he or she is practicing in. Although there is not one unifying body that regulates justices of the peace, a common set of responsibilities includes: evictions, small claims, and civil procedures. And by civil procedures, of course, we mean marriages.

Of course, becoming a justice of the peace requires having had a long and distinguished legal career. It is not uncommon for justices to have once been judges — either on the federal or state level. For many judges, rather than slip quietly into retirement or a lucrative private sector job, they opt to become justices of the peace and continue their dedicated service.

In the end, when most people think about justices of the peace, they think of the kindly old man waiting to marry couple eager for nuptial bliss. This can’t be helped as this has been the stereotype reinforced by popular culture, especially in romantic comedies. Indeed, for more rural towns and municipalities, the justice of the peace is the central figure that brings people to together.
