Guidelines For Purchasing Engagement Rings

By Sachin K Airan

If you are thinking about getting married, purchasing the perfect ring is something you have in mind, but there are a few things to consider when you are looking at a variety of engagement rings. Deciding on the type of metal for the band or the size and shape of the diamond are probably the most important things to consider, but the style of the settings might be other things that come to mind. If you have personal preferences for style, you might consider spending more on solitaire engagement rings and make your wedding band more elaborate, if you are considering investment. A single diamond is worth more than several smaller diamonds that make up the same carat size, but also more expensive.

There are some very elaborate solitaire guards that feature all kinds of baguettes, smaller stones or colored stones and they wrap around the solitaire in a variety of ways. This is something to consider because many people will choose a two carat solitaire diamond, from an investment standpoint and this allows them more flexibility in the style of wedding bands they select.

When it comes to the diamond you select, two carat diamonds are considered investment quality, but there are many couples that opt for one carat diamonds. Colored diamonds will be considerably more expensive and a one carat size is considered investment quality in pink diamonds, blue diamonds or yellow diamonds.

The next thing to think about is the type of metal that the band is made of. Many couples will prefer the more expensive white gold engagement rings or the platinum engagement rings to the yellow gold rings because the diamonds will appear more luminescent, but they are also more expensive. This is a consideration for some couples, but the platinum is the most expensive, yet the most strong and durable. White gold is made with an alloy of silver, palladium or nickel to increase the strength, since pure gold is very soft.

For that reason, even yellow gold will have addictive, but 18 carat gold is 75% pure gold and 25% of another metal for added strength. All types of metal bands might be coated in rhodium for additional protection, but this coating might need refreshed every five years approximately, for the best shine and protection.

Many people will choose the platinum rings, if their budget allows, although be prepared that the price might be twice as much as comparable choices in gold. Try to get the best investment your budget allows, but some people will choose more affordable bands and spend more on the diamond solitaire, so this is something to consider.

You want to be certain that diamonds are certified and gold or platinum is quality stamped, but finding a reputable and trustworthy source is the best way to get the best value and quality, when it comes to shopping for engagement rings. Personal choice in style and materials might dictate what guidelines you follow for choosing the ring that is best suited. Keep these simple pointers in mind, when you are making your selection, however.
