Five Important Steps When Hiring A Food Caterer

By Aaron Hu

The wine wedding favors that you give to your guests should compliment the type of food you are serving at your wedding for those who cannot wait to try your selection. Silver wedding favors are a great choice for people whom you know would prefer not to receive wine as a favor. Choosing your reception menu is difficult when you are trying to please everyone but before you get to this stage, you will need to select the best caterer for your wedding size and need. If there were one area of your wedding that you should not skimp on, it would be the food. Here are a few things to look for when deciding who caters your wedding.

Always interview at least five caterers and do not stop interviewing when you find one that you like. You never know if the next caterer will be the one that you love. Base your decision on several factors and keep a score sheet based on a point system for the best results. You may enjoy one caterer’s food but the presentation might be terrible or they may have a reputation for being slow or late. If you use several criteria for your interviewing process, you are sure to find one who will be the perfect choice for your individual needs.

Google is a fantastic tool if you are checking for any bad experiences that others may have had with a particular caterer. If they are so bad that someone wrote about the experience and posted on the World Wide Web, you should know about it. Always check the references that they supply and then–check even deeper. It only makes sense that they would supply you with only the good and keep the bad reviews or situations to themselves. You can look at archived wedding announcements to find people you can contact about food caterers that are not used as references.

It is always a good idea to sample a caterer’s food. You will learn more about a caterer while in his or her kitchen than in any other fashion. Always be wary of any food caterer who is reluctant to find a way for you to taste their cooking. If they resist, they could be hiding one of two things, either they are lazy and do not want to take the time or trouble, or they simply do not cook well. If, for some legitimate reason, you cannot sample their cooking firsthand, ask the references what was served and what they thought of it.

Look for caterers that are organized and that bring plenty of material to the interview to show you. If a caterer shows up with empty hands and needs to borrow a pencil from you to write things down then they are probably not the right caterer for you. Follow your instincts. A gut feeling is worth a second look during a first interview.

Finally, always ask to see a caterer’s transport truck. You can tell a lot by how organized and clean a caterer’s truck is. Do not be afraid to poke around or lift a hot bin from its position to verify it is not just a very good surface clean. The cleaner and more organized the truck or trucks, the higher the marks. Personality is great but it should not factor in to who gets the job.
