Five Songs To Dance With Your Father At Your Wedding

By Aaron Hu

The big day is just around the corner and all your plans are finalized. The wedding party favors have been ordered, the caterers are lined up. The wedding hall is decorated and everything either has been transported or is ready to transport. You believe you have it made, thinking the only two things that really required in depth personalization were the wedding guest favors and the music. This is usually the moment that you realize you have not chosen the song to which you and your father will dance. Don’t panic, while choosing this song can be difficult, here is a list of the top five father/daughter dance songs just in time to save your day and make it extra special.

Daddy’s Little Girl Believe it or not, Daddy’s little Girl is the most popular song played at weddings for the father/daughter dance. Hmm, I wonder why; could it be the title? That would be a pretty good guess, I would think. The lyrics, “You’re the end of the rainbow, my pot of gold. You’re daddy’s little to have and to hold.” Are perfect for that special “last” dance with your father and will surely bring a tear to his eyes. The song was originally recorded by The Mills Brothers” but the most popular version is that of Al Martino. Note: Do not accidentally choose the version by Jesse McCartney. I don’t think your father wants to hear you shake it like you’re trying to break it.

The “Unforgettable” Cole Family Another popular choice was made special several years ago when this talented daughter finally got the chance to record this song with her father, even though he had already passed away some years ago. I you guessed Natalie Cole and her supremely talented father Nat King Cole, you guessed correctly. The song, “Unforgettable” is one of the all time classics made even more special when they came together on video to perform it. Natalie is recorded as saying that it took many takes to get to the point that she could sing the song all the way through without crying like a little girl. Natalie, it is okay because many of his and now your fans cry every time we hear it!

Daddy’s Hands Most any song with “Daddy” in the title would make a good dance song for a wedding with, of course, some obvious exceptions. There are quite a few country songs that fit the bill even without “Daddy” being in the title. One such favorite is “Daddy’s Hands” which is a sad-ish song about Daddy’s love and having a firm hand when it was needed. I guess most country songs are sad by nature. Instead of the blues, maybe they should call them the grays.

I wonder if Bob Carlisle knew that he was creating what would become one of the most popular father and daughter wedding day dances of all time when he wrote “Butterfly Kisses.” While the odds are that he did not, it is an even better bet that he knows it now. This is right near the top of the list when it comes to cute and/or beautiful little songs played at weddings, usually for the father and daughter. I can still remember all the butterfly and Eskimo kisses my pops would give to me whenever I was feeling a little bit blue. The fact is, dads are special people, and most of us are one of a kind.
